It was started in 1978 based on the interest and project development of Dr. Dario Zarro, head physician in the department of gynaecology and obstetrics, and under the medical and scientific direction of Dr. Aldo Campana and Dr. Marco Balerna to help infertile couples satisfy their desire to become parents.
In 1984, the first pregnancy and birth by in vitro and embryo transfer insemination in Switzerland occurred in this Centre, one of the first pregnancies and births by intratubal transfer of gametes (GIFT) in Europe.
The Centre in Locarno quickly became a reference point for many Swiss and European couples who desired and searched for help to have a child.
