Internal medicine

The specialties

Internal medicine is a very broad branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of different diseases, approaching them from a medical, as opposed to surgical, point of view. It deals with all organs and internal systems of the human body (e.g., cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, musculoskeletal system, and the metabolic systems) and the interactions among them.

The multidisciplinary approach

Dipartimento di Medicina Interna EOC takes a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with the EOC Emergency Department and EOC Intensive Care Medicine.

Hospital care is oriented toward continuity of care and individualized patient care and relies on multidisciplinary expertise including physicians, nurses, social workers, case managers, quality of care and patient safety specialists, and administrative staff.

Dipartimento di Medicina Interna EOC relies on the possibility of interdisciplinary collaborations with other EOC services, including:

Medical Assessment Service

Medical Assessment Service
The Medical Assessment Service (SAM) is a center specializing in the performance of multidisciplinary and bidisciplinary medical expertise that works in accordance with the best medical knowledge and insurance medicine and is mandated by the Disability Insurance, and various insurance and legal institutions ( courts and tribunals) to assess complex clinical pictures.

The multidisciplinary medical expertise
This type of expert opinion is aimed at determining what work activities the insured person is able to perform, considering all the limitations related to his or her illnesses.
As a rule, the expert opinion consists of an expert opinion in general internal medicine and other medical or neuropsychological specialties. The quality of the work performed by the SAM is attested by the federal supervisory body, the Federal Social Insurance Office FSIO, with which a specific and binding cooperation agreement has been signed. Medical expertise must meet the quality requirements set by the relevant authorities.

Our appraisers
Numerous expert witnesses participate within the SAM, ensuring the impartiality and independence of the assessment performed, as well as compliance with medical ethics. The medical experts active in SAM hold the qualification of SIM expert , obtained after attending 5 Modules and taking the corresponding examination. SAM also avails itself of the collaboration of numerous specialist appraisers outside SAM who practice in the territory of Ticino and also within the EOC. Below you can find the list of our appraisers, structured by medical discipline.
