The hospital
Ospedale Civico is one of the two sites of Ospedale Regionale di Lugano. It is complementary to the Ospedale Italiano and together they represent the public acute hospital hub of the Lugano area. Attached to the facilities of Ospedale Civico are the Istituto Cardiocentro Ticino, the Istituto di Neuroscienze Cliniche della Svizzera Italiana, and the Istituto di Scienze Farmacologiche della Svizzera Italiana.
The Ospedale Civico, together with Ospedale Italiano, in addition to being the public reference facility for acute medicine in the Lugano area, is the cantonal reference for complex acute medicine of the adult patient. It offers 24-hour emergency room service every day, a wide range of basic and specialized, multi-disciplinary and complex services, serving, precisely, the entire Canton of Ticino. In fact, it is the only recognized center for highly specialized medicine at the cantonal level.
