Oncology and research

Clinical research encompasses all human studies conducted in order to improve knowledge about diseases, with the ultimate goal of developing new drugs and therapies and improving patient care. The Swiss Oncology Institute is one of the leading cancer clinical research centers in Switzerland. Approximately 25 new clinical trials are activated each year, and about 60 clinical trials are open at the same time. Our goal is to be able to offer patients access to innovative and cutting-edge therapies.

Scopes

Clinical research at IOSI

The Clinical Research Unit (CRU-IOSI), is responsible for the management and coordination of clinical trials with investigational therapies at all stages of development. The CRU-IOSI is the point of contact for all matters pertaining to the conduct of clinical research and supports investigators and various research groups with the goal of improving the quality of clinical research by encouraging a culture of innovation.

IOSI'sNew Drug Development Unit, based at the San Giovanni Hospital in Bellinzona, is specifically dedicated to developing and conducting phase I clinical trials, including clinical trials with drugs never before tested in humans ("first-in-human") aimed at evaluating new drugs and/or innovative therapeutic approaches.

These units have highly qualified medical and nursing staff with long experience in conducting clinical trials at all stages of development (phase I-III studies and translational studies). They collaborate with all units and physicians at IOSI for patients included in clinical trials and with national and international consortia, institutes and research groups to conduct multicenter clinical trials.

The main themes of clinical research at IOSI are new drug development, prostate cancer and lymphatic neoplasms.

Other research topics include breast cancer, lung cancer, research in hematology, gastrointestinal cancers, gynecological cancers, melanomas, and research in radiation therapy.

Highlights

Clinical trials with experimental therapies are currently underway at IOSI for both patients with solid tumors and patients with lymphomas and other hematologic malignancies.

Patients can contact the medical head of clinical research directly or through their treating physicians. If there is an indication for one of the available experimental therapies, an appointment is made for a medical consultation. Treatment is started only after the patient has evaluated and accepted the proposed therapy, the manner in which the treatment is to be carried out, and the controls to be performed, then reading and signing the informed consent approved by the cantonal ethics committee.
