Oncology and research

Clinical research encompasses all human studies conducted in order to improve knowledge about diseases, with the ultimate goal of developing new drugs and therapies and improving patient care. The Swiss Oncology Institute is one of the leading cancer clinical research centers in Switzerland. Approximately 25 new clinical trials are activated each year, and about 60 clinical trials are open at the same time. Our goal is to be able to offer patients access to innovative and cutting-edge therapies.

Scopes

Clinical Research at the Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana

The Clinical Research Unit ( CRU-IOSI) is responsible for managing and coordinating clinical trials involving experimental therapies at all stages of development. The CRU-IOSI serves as the point of contact for all matters related to the conduct of clinical research and supports investigators and various research groups with the goal of improving the quality of clinical research while fostering a culture of innovation.

The New Drug Development Unit of the Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana, based at the Ospedale San Giovanni in Bellinzona, is specifically dedicated to the development and conduct of Phase I clinical trials, including “first-in-human”) designed to evaluate new drugs and/or innovative therapeutic approaches.

These units are staffed by highly qualified medical and nursing personnel with extensive experience in conducting clinical trials at all stages of development (Phase I–III trials and translational studies). They collaborate with all IOSI units and physicians regarding patients enrolled in clinical trials, as well as with national and international consortia, institutes, and research groups to conduct multicenter clinical trials.

The main areas of clinical research at the Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana are the development of new drugs, prostate cancer, and lymphatic neoplasms.

Other research areas include breast cancer, lung cancer, hematology research, gastrointestinal cancers, gynecological cancers, melanoma, and radiation therapy research.

Highlights

Clinical trials using experimental therapies are currently underway at the Institute for patients with solid tumors, as well as for patients with lymphomas and other hematologic malignancies.

Patients may contact the physician in charge of clinical research directly or through their treating physicians. If a patient is deemed eligible for one of the available experimental therapies, an appointment is scheduled for a medical consultation. Treatment begins only after the patient has reviewed and accepted the treatment proposal, the treatment protocol, and the required follow-up visits, and has read and signed the informed consent form approved by the cantonal ethics committee.

The active studies atthe Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana can be viewed on the international portal ClinicalTrials.gov and via our SNCTP portal link.
