Thoracic surgery

• Lung cancer.

• Pathologies of the pleura: infectious (empyema) or primary and secondary tumor diseases.

• Pneumothorax: spontaneous and secondary.
• Pulmonary emphysema: reduction in lung volume.
• Hyperhidrosis.
• Chest trauma: closed and/or open.
• Hemothorax.
• Major hemoptysis.

Surgical activity is characterized by an approach ranging from minimally invasive (robot-Da Vinci, VATS, UVATS) to major surgeries (necessary in more advanced cases of disease-20% of cases).

The most frequent oncologic procedures on the lung are:

• lobectomy, segmentectomy, bilobectomy, pneumonectomy, bronchial and vascular sleeve: for removal of lung tumors;
• wedge: for removal of lung metastases.

The EOC is the highly specialized cantonal referral center for what concerns thoracic surgery. The service adopts the most innovative minimally invasive surgery techniques, including robotics and the thoracoscopic technique.

The EOC thoracic surgery is an integral part of the Centro Polmone della Svizzera Italiana and was awarded European quality certification in 2023, achieving the title of European Lung Cancer Center .
