Inpatient and outpatient treatments
The EOC's wide range of treatment ranges from inpatient to outpatient settings, with the patient's overall clinical picture being the factor that determines the indicated treatment approach.
Pulmonary rehabilitation
It is specifically aimed at patients with chronic lower respiratory tract diseases who have problems following lung disease and/or thoracic surgery. The purpose of rehabilitation is to reduce physical and pathological impairment, increase patients' physical and mental performance, and promote their social reintegration.
Approach
A fundamental characteristic is multidisciplinarity; the interaction between the rehabilitation pulmonologist and the respiratory physiotherapist is fundamental and indispensable in designing and managing together an individualized rehabilitation program, consisting of both theperformance of respiratory exercises designed to facilitate lung ventilation and a true educational part (useful, for example, to counteract any tobacco habit, educate patients about the disease and the correct use of inhalation therapy drugs and oxygen, and promote a healthy lifestyle).
Performance
Pulmonary rehabilitation includes a range of treatments useful for the individualized rehabilitation program.
When and how to intervene?
Respiratory diseases are multifaceted and involve the patient at different stages of the disease. In fact, pulmonary rehabilitation deals not only with chronic patients (COPD, asthma, emphysema, interstitial lung disease) but also with chronic and non-acute patients (pneumonia, COVID, COPD exacerbations), surgical patients (pre and post thoracic or abdominal surgery), and patients in the acute event outcome phase(long-COVID).
Respiratory physiotherapy is mainly prescribed by the pulmonary specialist who makes the diagnosis; the patient is then referred to the rehabilitation pulmonologist, who through further and specific evaluations, refers the patient to a structured pulmonary rehabilitation pathway. The general practitioner or physicians in other hospital departments may also refer patients to a pulmonary rehabilitation pathway.
