Obstetrics - maternity

Obstetrics-maternity is concerned with the care and assistance of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, that is, the immediate postpartum period when the relationship between the child and parental figures begins. The Cantonal Hospital Authority holds the prestigious UNICEF child-friendly hospital certification.

What we deal with

  • Pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Puerperium and breastfeeding.
  • Newborn care, accompaniment and teaching in newborn management.
  • Lactation and postpartumcounseling.
  • Support in the mother/father-childrelationship .
  • Active listening counseling in the mother/father-child relationship.

Maternity offers comprehensive accompaniment to mothers-to-be. The entire team formed by the specialized doctors, midwives and medical office assistants welcomes them during the appointments scheduled in the pregnancy calendar, with the goal of creating a privileged and trusting bond for all the needs of the future new family, in the magical journey of pregnancy. For childbirth, the reception in the delivery room is managed by the midwives, in an environment of comfort, which responds to the different needs and requests of the patient.

Diagnosis and treatment

Pregnancy

The first checkup after a positive pregnancy test can be performed at week 8 of amenorrhea. Thereafter, visits are generally scheduled monthly. Monitoring a high-risk pregnancy, on the other hand, may involve additional visits and more extensive examinations.

In physiologic pregnancies, the health of the mother and baby is monitored monthly at the clinical-laboratory and instrumental levels through:

  • obstetric examination;
  • comprehensiveblood tests ;
  • obstetric ultrasound scans.

Therefore, the pregnancy calendar includes a total of at least 9 prenatal consultations with a minimum of 2 ultrasounds performed in the prenatal diagnosis outpatient clinic:

  • at 11-13 +6 weeks, 1st trimester test;
  • at 20-22 weeks, morphological examination.

Childbirth

For pregnancies over 32 weeks of gestation, labor and physiological delivery are managed by the midwife and obstetric doctor, in the delivery room, with the possibility of using Maya chair and tub in addition to the classic birthing bed, following the wishes and needs of the parturient. In case of need and to the extent compatible with safety regulations there isepidural anesthesia available.

Management of any complications during labor or delivery requires additional measures, such as:

  • induction of labor, which is the stimulation of uterine contractions prior to spontaneous labor in order to allow vaginal delivery;
  • operative vaginal delivery, through the use of forceps or suction cup;
  • resort to cesarean delivery, a surgical delivery performed by incision of the uterus.

In each eventuality, immediate skin-to-skin contact between mother and infant and early attachment to the breast is encouraged, whether following physiologic vaginal delivery or after cesarean delivery.

The care and support given to the mother and newborn are supported by rooming-in, which is the ability for the mother to manage her baby in her own room 24 hours a day during the hospital stay.
