Gynecology

We deal with all issues that may be related to the female reproductive system, whether they are actual diseases (such as, for example, sexually transmitted infections) or physiological conditions that cause troublesome symptoms (as may occur in menopause). In more detail, we deal with:

• routine gynecological check-ups: they include cervical cancer screening by PAP-TEST and screening for breast cancer;
• menstrual cycle disorders;
• menstrual pain;
• disorders of the sexual sphere;
• genito-urinary tractinfections;
• vaginal inflammation;
• benign pathology of the genital tract: fibroids, uterine polyps;
• menopause management;
• post-menopausal management;
• pre-conception counseling;
• uterine myomas;
• endometriosis;
• pelvic floor inflammation.

Oncologic diseases,urogenital pathologies,infertility, and senologic pathologies, which may be suspected/diagnosed as a result of the checkup performed, are taken over by the specific clinical specialties of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics EOC.

Diagnosis

Following a thorough outpatient examination, with a complete gynecological and breast history and clinical examination, a diagnosis will be formulated and the appropriate medical or surgical treatment will be proposed.

As part of the gynecological examination, complementary examinations can be performed, if necessary, to finalize the diagnosis and consequently offer the best therapeutic approach for the specific situation. The tools are available to perform additional examinations such as colposcopy and pelvic ultrasound.

• Colposcopy: examination of the cervix and vagina using a binocular loupe in search of inflammatory lesions, precancerous lesions or cancerous lesions, with the possibility of performing targeted biopsies. It is indicated in case of abnormal result on screening PAP-test, following suspicious mirror examination for abnormalities, for follw-up of already known or treated lesions.
• Pelvic ult rasonography that visualizes the ovaries the uterus and the bladder and allows to unveil abnormalities or to follow the evolution of already diagnosed pathologies. In particular, ultrasonography is required:
  • in cases of pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding;
  • to evaluate the endometrium;
  • to diagnose possible uterine malformations;
  • to diagnose ovarian cysts, uterine polyps, or uterine fibroids;
  • to make an infertility assessment;
  • to confirm successful placement of an intrauterine device.

Treatments

Gynecology EOC has developed expertise in numerous fields and is able to offer surgical care of all gynecological conditions. In particular, it has implemented innovative and minimally invasive surgery techniques in order to improve patients' postoperative comfort (laser, laparoscopy, robotic surgery).

She collaborates with the services of:

• radiology and interventional radiology;
• anesthesiology;
• intensive care medicine.

Centro di Endometriosi EOC

The Centro di Endometriosi EOC, managed and coordinated by Dr. med. Polli, is a public service specialized in the diagnosis and care of women with endometriosis. Created in 2014, within the Ospedale Regionale di Lugano, it allows a comprehensive evaluation of the disease that defines a therapy tailored to each type of patient.

Since 2014, our Center has held a European certification - SEF " Stiftung Endometriose-Forschung " - attesting to its high quality in the management of women with endometriosis. The certificate has been renewed in 2021. This recognition places our department in a close circle of highly specialized national centers that guarantee up-to-date therapy according to the latest world guidelines.

ERAS certification

The ERAS ("Enhanced Recovery After Surgery") protocol was created with the aim of ensuring optimal recovery and an early and safe return to daily activities by patients after surgery. At the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics EOC, the ERAS management project focuses on the pathway of patients undergoing hysterectomy.
