Transforming the enormous amount of available data into a valuable resource for improving the quality of care. The road is marked and the revolution is underway, but the centrality of the human being must be reaffirmed, with priority given to protecting patient privacy, cybersecurity, and adherence to the highest ethical standards.
Areas of focus
In the year 2024, in line with the strategic plan 2022-2026, we report some of the activities related to the digital transformation process in EOC.
Patient care and administrative efficiency
Various initiatives coordinated by the Medical Education and Research Area (AFRi) and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Area, in close collaboration with other areas,partner hospitals and universities. There are many areas of application including automatic analysis of clinical documentation to identify adverse drug reactions (QUADRATIC project), predictive diagnosis of pneumonia in intensive care patients (AI-VAP project) and semi-automated discharge letter writing (AutoDischarge). Innovation aims to develop ready-to-use tools, such as the ICT area's AI system that recognizes prolonged hospital stays in advance.
AI, data protection and privacy
To responsibly manage critical issues related to data protection and the use of AI, the EOC is preparing internal regulations governing its adoption, ensuring safe and informed use.
Image analysis
AI is now available in the medical software market and can be integrated into clinical practice as certified, ready-to-use software. These solutions are particularly advanced in image analysis for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. One example is CytoProcessor, introduced in 2024 by the Canton Institute of Pathology, which accelerates and improves the diagnosis of cervical cancer, with thousands of cases analyzed each month.
