Education and research represent two fundamental pillars of EOC's Vision and Mission. Also in 2024, there is a renewed commitment to keep them at the center of attention, recognizing their crucial role in identifying increasingly effective and safe treatments and preparing the physicians of the near future.
Areas of focus
In the year 2023, in line with the strategic plan 2022-2026, we report some of the activities related to the digital transformation process in EOC.
Clinical research
Between 2021 and 2024, EOC initiated 481 clinical trials, of which 351 are still ongoing. In 2024 alone, 109 new studies were activated, with 108 still active, confirming the ongoing commitment to clinical trials. The studies cover various medical disciplines and contribute to the improvement of care. The Clinical Trial Unit EOC (CTU-EOC), a member of the Swiss Clinical Trial Organization (SCTO), has provided strategic, methodological and operational support, ensuring high quality standards. In 2024, the CTU-EOC participated in 166 projects, 74 of which were initiated during the year.
Training Award
During 2024 EOC was awarded the National Prize for Education by the Swiss SUP Foundation and the Hans Huber Foundation, a prestigious award (20,000 CHF to be reinvested in education) for the first time awarded in Ticino and of which we are particularly proud.
Continuing Education
During 2024, the results of EOC training efforts were consolidated: the significant increase in the number of in-house courses (more than 400) produced by EOFORM in collaboration with EOC departments and services was matched by a general increase in participation. The proposed activities focused both on specific technical skills and on the development of equally fundamental communication and interpersonal skills.
Nursing education
In 2024, the number and role of Advanced Practice Nurses I - APNs (Advanced Practice Nurses) grew, with a positive impact on the quality of care and relevant scientific production, also presented at national and international events. There are currently 18 active APNs, 10 of whom are already enrolled in a Master of Science in Nursing program, with others in the process of following suit. Induction is through a structured process based on a validated international model. These developments confirm EOC's commitment to the enhancement of the nursing profession and the continuous improvement of standards of care.
