Projects in the structural field

Important news is coming from Bellinzona and Valleys Regional Hospital that marks 2024 as a breakthrough year for its services. In April, a week surgery ward with 18 beds dedicated to short-stay surgical patients was inaugurated, operating Monday through Friday. This initiative aims to improve the efficiency and management of short stays.

In July, after five years of work slowed by the pandemic, the new emergency room at St. John's Hospital was opened. The facility receives about 22,000 adult and 12,000 pediatric admissions annually, ensuring a modern and comfortable environment for patients and caregivers. Infrastructural development of the new six-room operating block was also completed in 2024, opening in spring 2025.

The summer of 2024 marked the start of preparations for the expansion of the hospital's new South Wing, a project that responds to the evolution of medicine, with an increasing focus on outpatient versus inpatient care. The new wing will house outpatient and day care spaces, clearly separating outpatient and inpatient pathways. The spaces will be organized flexibly and efficiently, accommodating both in-house specialists and those from the multisite hospital EOC. One floor will be dedicated to internal medicine, the other to surgical specialties.

Also in 2024, in-house projects have been launched to expand the Emergency Department, with the aim of improving the care of pediatric patients on the ground floor of the hospital, and to modernize the operating block, to keep up with an evolving surgery that is increasingly oriented toward minimally invasive techniques.

The Mendrisio Regional Hospital's space revision project also continues in the services and departments of the main building. With this in mind, on June 26, 2024, the official presentation of the new Medicine 1 department, which has been completely renovated and moved from the 1st to the 4th floor, was held. The investment in the renovation and modernization of the main building aims to improve patient comfort by creating modern and cozy spaces. In the new Medicine Department, three- and four-bed rooms have been eliminated in favor of more single and double rooms.
