Complex Cutaneous Tumor Center

The Complex Cutaneous Tumor Center, active since 2022 and operated in collaboration between EOC Dermatology and IOSI, draws on the multidisciplinary expertise of the Cantonal Institute of Pathology, the Department of Surgery and all EOC Services that may be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of complex cutaneous malignancies.

Headed by PD Dr. med. Cristina Mangas - with specialized training in both dermatology and venereology and medical oncology - the Center's specific aim is to ensure the best therapeutic management of patients with complex and/or rare epithelial cancers, cutaneous lymphomas and toxidermias caused by drugs used for oncological treatments. Cutaneous malignancies are by far the most frequent type of cancer in the human species and are steadily increasing among the Caucasian population due to an aging population and changing leisure habits.

Increasing incidence rates of cutaneous melanoma and skin epithelial cancers are largely attributed to excessive UV exposure, the main environmental risk factor for skin cancer. Although incidence rates of these cancers are increasing worldwide, thanks to modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, mortality rates are stable or decreasing. As early as 2015, the EOC established a Tumor Board that brought together the various specialists involved in the care of patients with skin cancers (dermatologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, general and plastic surgeons, nuclear medicine physicians, and palliativists) to adequately, multidisciplinarily, and efficiently address the increased case load of this type of cancer.

The activation of the Complex Cutaneous Tumor Center represents a further step forward and a strong commitment by the EOC to ensure increasingly effective and safe diagnosis and treatment for these patients.
