Internal medicine and research

The EOC Department of Medicine supports and promotes translational and clinical research in several areas of internal medicine: dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and hepatology, general internal medicine, geriatrics, infectious diseases, nephrology and pulmonology. Research activity is coordinated by the Local Research Unit (LRU) of the EOC Department of Medicine.

Scopes

In view of the Department's diverse fields of interest, the following are some examples of ongoing research projects:

  • Retrospective data analysis of oncology patients followed at the Swiss Italian Oncology Institute for whom a specialized dermatologic evaluation was requested for a dermatologic adverse event, with the aim of collecting, analyzing, and classifying data on the different types of dermatologic toxicity experienced by patients undergoing systemic anticancer therapies and the correlation with disease progression.
  • Multicenter randomized controlled trial (OCTOPLUS). The primary objective is to evaluate the difference in diagnostic accuracy in patients with suspected pneumonia using low-dose CT (LDCT) versus conventional radiography (CXR).
  • Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 and risk of cardiac arrhythmias in hemodialysis patients.
  • Application of wearable devices in endocrine and metabolic disorders.
  • Studies on the effects of oral BI 685509 on portal hypertension after 24 weeks of treatment in patients with clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) in compensated cirrhosis.
  • PANDORA dyadic project: Hope, spiritual well-being and quality of life of dyads of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Switzerland.
