Gynecology and research

The Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics has progressively implemented its scientific profile and enhanced the professional skills and synergies of an established group of specialists, declining on the territory of Ticino a medical culture based on the daily habit of comparison and exchange of experiences and knowledge with the best institutes in the Swiss and international scene. The intense research activity is flanked by the 'commitment to training in the master's program in human medicine at USI.

Scopes

A large slice of research in gynecology focuses on senology, for which clinical research is essential to continue to improve breast cancer care and make new treatments quickly available for all women who need them.

In particular, some important outstanding questions are sought to be answered:

  • In surgery: can axillary surgery be avoided?
  • In radiation therapy: can whole-breast irradiation be avoided?
  • In medical oncology: can one stop treatment to try to have a child?

The Senology Center of the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland EOC (CSSI) also participates in several national and international research projects, such as:

  • Treatment Guidelines in Young and Older Patients.
  • Swiss registry of young and elderly patients.

Research also includes the development of new drugs, the study of the impact of diet and physical activity both during treatment and as prevention of relapse.

Other research areas in which there are currently active studies include:endometriosis, maternity, andurogynecology.

Highlights

The Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Oncological Institute of Italian Switzerland (IOSI) and the Institute of Oncological Research (IOR) are currently collaborating on two lines of translational research focusing on the immune landscape in breast and ovarian cancer patients. For this purpose, umbilical cord blood from 190 patients who delivered at Lugano Regional Hospital is being collected and processed at the IOR's Cancer Immunotherapy Laboratory. Recruitment is on a voluntary basis and is currently offered to all patients delivering at Lugano Regional Hospital.

Finally, multiple retrospective studies are continuously produced both as a single center and in collaboration with some of the partners in the research network.
