Sarcomas are rare connective tissue tumours. They often affect the locomotory system (e.g. bones, joints and muscles). In the past, their treatment involved major amputations. Today, often they can be treated whilst preserving the limbs, thanks to high-tech surgical techniques and multidisciplinary treatments, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Some treatments can be carried out in Ticino at the EOC and IOSI. However, some surgical procedures are so specialised that they require the involvement of centres outside Ticino. For this reason, IOSI collaborates closely with the Swiss Sarcoma Network, a network of sarcoma specialists, chaired by Professor Bruno Fuchs, which is active at the Winterthur Cantonal Hospital and at the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital. Cases from the EOC are discussed weekly via an interdisciplinary sarcoma video conference (Sarkomaboard meeting).
