Leukaemia Back

The IOSI treats all leukaemias, both acute and chronic. Intensive chemotherapy for acute leukaemia is carried out in the inpatient ward of the IOSI in Bellinzona (Ospedale San Giovanni). Chemotherapy given to outpatients, is carried out in all IOSI outpatient clinics. Due to the increasing complexity of leukaemia diagnosis and treatment, all leukaemias are discussed within an interdisciplinary team that includes oncologists, pathologists and haematologists. For all forms of leukaemia, there are national and international clinical trials in which IOSI is actively involved. For some situations, experimental drugs are available. Cases requiring a donor stem cell transplant (allogeneic bone marrow transplantation) are treated in collaboration with the transplantation centre of Basel University Hospital.

PD Dr. med. Georg Stüssi, head of the IOSI haematology service, is also chairman of the SAKK Leukaemia Research Group and is responsible for various leukaemia studies in Switzerland.
