The research is the most important activity of the Lymphoma Unit. In the last 30 years, anonymous clinical and pathological data of patients with lymphoma have been regularly collected. So far, in our database have been stored over 2000 cases. This tool is extremely important both for the participation in international research projects and for a regular comparison ("audit") of the clinical results with the results published by the main oncologic centres.
Since 1998, the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland houses the coordination center of the International extranodal Lymphoma Study Group (IELSG), an international research group which brings together researchers from all around the world. Thanks to the important number of publications in the main onco-haematological journals, the IELSG has achieved an excellent international reputation.
The ongoing clinical trials comprise:
- participation in national clinical research protocols of SAKK
- collaboration with the New Drugs Unit
- coordination of the group of international research IELSG that deals especially with the study of extranodal lymphoma, i.e. those which arise outside the immune system
- regular collaborations at national and international levels with focus on the study of biological and molecular characteristics of lymphoma, especially with the Institute of Oncology Research (in particular, with the group of Prof. Dr. F. Bertoni), which is internationally recognised for its studies of the molecular biology of lymphoma.
