Prof. Michele Ghielmini is Medical director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland in Bellinzona and Head of the Medical Oncology Department. He is also Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Prof. Ghielmini was born in Ticino, Switzerland. He studied Medicine in Lausanne where he graduated in 1985 and completed his PhD in 1988. He attended his post-graduate studies in Ticino, Zurich and Basel, followed by post-graduate training in Bern and a research fellowship at the Christie Cancer Centre, Manchester, UK and at the University Hospital of Frankfurt, Germany.
He achieved the specialisation in Internal Medicine in 1993 and in Haematologic Oncology in 1995. In 2001 he achieved the title of Privat Dozent at the University of Bern where he was appointed Honorary Professor in 2007.
As an expert in the treatment of malignant lymphoma, Prof. Ghielmini was for several years member of the editorial board of Annals of Oncology and of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Prof. Ghielmini is member of the Lymphoma Section of the Swiss Group of Clinical research against Cancer (SAKK), which he chaired from 2001 to 2006 and of which he still a member of the scientific committee. He is Chair of the ESMO Publishing Working Group and member of the ESMO Educational Committee.
Prof. Ghielmini has been Chair of several national and international studies in the field of lymphomas. He has authored many publications mainly in the field of haemato-toxicology, autologous stem cell transplantation and treatment of lymphoma.
His recent clinical research has focused on the treatment of lymphoma with monoclonal antibodies.
