Our research focus are:
- Acute inflammatory neuropathies as Guillain-Barré syndrome (and its variants) and neuralgic amyotrophy. For Guillain-Barré, we are coordinating in Switzerland the study IGOS, a prospective international project that will clarify the variables influencing the outcome. We are investigating immunological aspects of the disease in collaboration with the Institute of Research in Biomedicine (IRB) of Bellinzona and with the Microbiology Department of EOLAB. For neuralgic amyotrophy, our research is focused on pathogenesis and diagnostic imaging, especially in the early phase
- Diagnostic use of nerve and muscle ultrasound (in addition to electromyography) in nerve trauma, inflammatory neuropathies and myopathies, muscle dystrophies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Investigation of the role of hepatitis E virus as a trigger of autoimmunity in neuromuscolar diseases
- Small fiber neuropathies and autonomic neuropathies in peripheral disorders and neurodegenerative diseases by immunofluorescence and proteomic analysis of skin biopsies
- Investigation of new drugs for painful neuropathies in clinical trials in collaboration with drug companies
- Investigation of dorsal root ganglion stimulation for the management of painful polyneuropathyes in collaboration with Pain Therapy Unit, OIL (Dr. med P. Maino)
