The Department of Laboratory Medicine (EOLAB) was set up to meet the requirements of modern medicine as regards laboratory services, and also because of the need to minimise costs and make more rational use of resources, including increasingly sophisticated and expensive equipment.
Although EOLAB operates in several areas in Ticino Canton, it has a centralised location for its technical, scientific and administrative services, thus providing a unified image of the whole Department.
This type of organisation has also a higher potential for rational development. The Department is the result of an innovative project, which also arouses interest outside Ticino Canton, and can be considered one of the major public institutions of medical analysis in Switzerland.
