It is an important priority for the neurological department to ensure not only continuous excellence in care, but also implementation of basic and clinical research, as well as educational duties.
The main focus of scientific activities in the neurology department at the NSI currently relies on multiple sclerosis, sleepdisorders, movement disorders and stroke; even though active research is also carried out in other fields of clinical neuroscience.
For clinical research, the NSI is collaborating with the Clinical Trial Unit of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale is located at the NSI.

Stroke and cerebrovascular disorders

Our research is mainly focused in acute treatment, diagnosis and prevention of acute ischemic cerebrovascular events. We are specially interested in analyzing the contribution of perfusion imaging of brain in order to individualize the best management for patients with an acute ischemic stroke.

Early diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and prediction of disease course is the main research focus of the multidisciplinary team of neurologists, a neuroradiologist and a neuropsychologist.

Neuropsychology and Behavioural Neurology Research Unit

The Neuropsychology and Behavioural Neurology Research Unit (NBNU) at Neurocenter of Southern Switzerland conducts research projects to identify, prevent, and improve cognitive and behavioural dysfunctions related to acquired brain damages and diseases, such as traumatic brain injuries, dementing disorders, and inflammatory diseases.

Movement-disorders

The priority of translational research efforts currently relies on the pathogenesis and potential treatment of dyskinesias, involuntary movements that develop in the course of the long-term levodopa treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease.

Besides the clinical activities of the multidisciplinary Sleep/EEG Center and the didactic initiatives with the post-doc Master in Academy of Sleep and Consciousness, we are also deeply involved in clinical research in the field of sleep and sleep disorders.
