Musculoskeletal diseases: Strategies to recover full function

The research focus entails different approaches, all leading in the end towards the optimization of the treatment strategies to allow patients affected by orthopedic diseases to go back to full function. In this light, research efforts are placed in the clinical practice to understand the limits and potential of the available treatment options and to identify strategies for a better outcome. This improvement may be achieved both by technical advancements, but also through the identification of the peculiarities of each patient, aiming at the development of a personalized medicine. Where the available treatment options are not satisfactory, clinical research efforts merge to those of the basic research activities, focusing on the development of new biological treatments to favor musculoskeletal tissue regeneration and healing. In particular, basic research activities deal with both the generation of viable musculoskeletal tissue replicates and the reproduction of those tissues by means of advanced in vitro models. The first activity aims at obtaining substitutes based on cells and biomaterials to be used in the clinic to replace damaged tissues (e.g. bone and/or cartilage plugs). In the second activity, we will achieve physiologically relevant tissue models, which will help in the identification of mechanisms at the basis of pathologies and to the discovery of new therapies in a more efficient way
