Diagnostic neuroradiology
This service offers neuroradiological diagnosis of conditions of the central and peripheral nervous system.
The team consists of 1.5 diagnostic neuroradiologists
and specialist technicians.
The technical and logistical platform is shared with the radiology service and Cardiocentro Ticino.
The main location of the neuroradiology service is the Regional Hospital of Lugano, Civico. Regular consultation at the Regional Hospital of Bellinzona and Valli is planned.
It uses two computerised axial tomography (CT) and one magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners to perform and interpret neuroradiological examinations:
- the CT scanners can be used to investigate diseases of the brain, spine and spinal cord. With special techniques it is also possible to obtain images of arteries and veins and possible abnormalities of these.
- MRI allows investigation of diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerve roots, muscles, peripheral nerves and the spine; it also permits analysis of cerebral flow and angiographic study of the intracranial and neck vessels
The new advanced MRI scanner (3 Tesla) will be installed during 2010.
Interventional neuroradiology
Invasive diagnostic and therapeutic unit for disorders of the nervous system.
The team currently consists of 1 interventional neuroradiologist and specialist technicians. Close collaboration with the radiology service and the Department of surgery (with an interventional angiologist) is planned.
The examinations are performed with an angiographic machine.
It allows:
- diagnosis of aneurysms, vascular stenoses, vascular malformations, tumours, vasculitis
- intra-arterial thrombolysis procedures for the anterior and posterior cerebral circulation, carotid stenting
