Stroke Unit and continuous neurological care
Continuous care unit for patients with acute cerebrovascular disease (ischaemic stroke and cerebral
haemorrhage) and non-cerebrovascular conditions requiring continuous care (status epilepticus, meningitis and encephalitis, serious diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, confusional states of organic origin, etc.).
The unit consists of 4 beds (extendible to 6) with continuous monitoring of vital signs and neuromonitoring.
The medical team coordinated by C. Städler MD (vice chief) and Prof. C. Bassetti MD consists of 3 specialists in cerebrovascular disease and 1.5 residents (2.5 from summer 2010). The multidisciplinary team is completed by neurosurgeons, specialist nurses, neuropsychologists, physiotherapists, ergotherapists, speech therapists and dieticians.
The unit offers:

treatment in the hyperacute phase of ischaemic stroke (e.g. intravenous and intra-arterial thrombolysis)
- priority access to diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI, conventional cerebral angiography)
- early neurorehabilitation
- neuro-ultrasound laboratory: Duplex/Doppler of the cerebral destination and intracranial vessels (in 2009: 1100 in- and outpatients)
- intra-hospital and outpatient neurovascular consultancy
